Welcome to the Vonage VoIP Forum DigestVonage Tip
Did you know that Vonage is currently the only VoIP company that has full access to 2-1-1 (in most if not all states), an information service for referrals to health, human, governmental, and other community services? Simply pick up the phone and dial 2-1-1. Go try it out! Of course, anyone can also dial (877) 211-8667 if 2-1-1 doesn't work from their phone.

Having CallerID trouble? You're not alone. This thread goes back to June of 2007 but continually receives new replies. If you are using the Linksys PAP2 and 50% of your calls say "INCOMPLETE DATA" on your phone's Caller ID display, then you should read this poster's reply: "I have been having the unknown caller on id periodically for some time. Yet my dashboard always showed the id. I finally got off the couch and called vonage to downgrade my PAP2V2 from firmware 1.00.22 to firmware 1.00.13. Caller id has been working fine ever since! Tech support was helpful and quick to help with this "known issue" with 1.00.22 on the PAP2V2."

You can buy just about everything else on eBay, so why not a Vonage router? Buying stuff on eBay is fun & addictive. But the question is, should you buy a Vonage router on eBay? Well, a thread over on the forums poses that very question. The short answer is "no". You get the latest & greatest router for free when you sign up with Vonage. However, the long answer is that if you cancel within the first few months, you'll be billed for the router and/or an early cancellation fee. But why would you cancel, anyway? ;)

Egads! ISPs charging by the byte? A two page thread is lighting up the forums about one poster who is worried that his Vonage line will cost him money since his ISP is gonig to start charging by the byte with certain bandwidth tiers. Many repliers to the post have the attitude of "Byte me!" and who could blame them? Unfortunately, in many areas you only have 1 choice of broadband provider or 2 at the most. The good news is as one poster puts it, "at 90kbps, each hour is roughly 40mb. let's say you talk for one hour every single day, in a month, that's only 1.2GB...." The tiered pricing scheme for this particular person kicks in at 30GB, 50GB, and 100GB, so the 1.2GB probably wouldn't put him into the next tier. Still, if your data bandwidth one month is 49GB, Vonage could put you over the edge into the next tier, which would add to your ISP bill.

Who needs rotary dialing with Vonage? Do rotary phones even exist except in the backwaters of some swamp in Alabama? Well, apparently some people want the feature - at least according to this thread in the Vonage Forums. Go figure...

Tech Resolutions

By Jason Fry
As 2006 arrived, I offered a quintet of New Year's resolutions1 intended to
drain the technological swamp that is the Fry household, a place where all the
technology vaguely worked -- there were no viruses or malware running around
loose, firewalls were up, and PCs accessed the Internet reliably, yet MP3s
didn't play through the stereo, the TiVo wasn't part of the wireless network,
and that network was a rat's nest of wired and wireless, gear that worked and
gear that didn't.
Three months in, how am I doing? Not bad for a busy parent of a three-year-old.
But not as well as I could. Here's a rundown of the resolutions, and the
progress made. Or yet to be made.

Internet phone company, Vonage, is quickly growing and proving that the Skype is
not the limit. By placing calls over the Web it’s helping home businesses save a
fortune on their phone bills. And it could help you too.
Vonage is a world leader
in the voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) business, with over 1.4 million
subscriber lines all over the world.
VoIP
VoIP technology allows people to make phone calls with their computers. Voice
signals are transmitted over the Web rather than through the copper wires that
have been the backbone of the telecom industry since the days of Alexander
Graham Bell.

We’ll soon be ringing the changes in the way we make phone calls.
Using the internet to phone family and friends is tipped to hit the mainstream
this year -and it will slash bills. That's on top of the price war predicted
this summer after Ofcom removed the shackles from BT and allowed them to set
their own charges.
More than ten million households now buy phone services from BT's rivals. About
a third of all calls are made on mobiles but calls via the internet are growing
fast.
Vonage Says One Million Subscriber Lines Now Have E911

On Thursday, Vonage said that more than one million of its subscriber lines now
have Enhanced 911 (E911) service -- a feature that automatically associates a
physical address with the calling party's telephone number.
In June, the FCC gave Vonage, and all Internet-based phone service companies,
120 days to create an E911 system, and provide all of its customers, wherever
they are in the U.S., with E911 service. In that amount of time, Vonage worked
with local 911 centers, also known as Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs),
across the country to turn on E911 for as many customers as it could. Currently,
Vonage says it continues to test and turn up new PSAPs which are VoIP-ready
every day and will continue to do so until Vonage customers have access to E911.

Panasonic cordless broadband phone for Vonage
Vonage already boasts the most diverse product portfolio among VOIP services,
including several WiFi and cordless phones. But this new one from Panasonic is
our favorite--the sleek base station is one of the few that doesn't require the
usual ugly VOIP adaptor box (it plugs directly into your cable or DSL modem).
