by Michael Osterman
30 Jun 2008 at 7:00pm
Some still believe that deleting all e-mail and other messaging content is the least risky strategy for their organization, that it reduces risk by eliminating e-mails that might contain damaging content from senior executives, etc. The number of those who believe in a "purge everything" strategy is diminishing rapidly compared to even just a couple of years ago.

IMS doubt in fashion, but concept keeps rolling
by Dan O'Shea
3 Jul 2008 at 9:46am

IP Multimedia Subsystem adoption was again a subject of debate at NXTcomm this year, and while carriers and vendors on panels and elsewhere had kind and thoughtful words about IMS, suggesting that the industry has become more realistic about the IMS transition, some industry folk were more critical away from the microphone. At least, one carrier executive and one vendor executive told me they were "tired" of hearing about IMS, that IMS was not necessary for service convergence plays, and that there were too many other pressing market issues for carriers to adopt grand IMS deployment plans.

Another vendor spokesman said he feared carrier customers would stall IMS pilot projects and tests to deal with broadband and IPTV competition and regulatory issues, and that amid confusion about the need for IMS, some carriers would fear they are being sold "an agenda, rather than a network solution." Yet, the IMS train keeps rolling, with hundreds of projects around the world in process, and it was clear from the discussions I had with several people who didn't want their names connected with IMS criticism that the industry is at least gradually benefitting from the intentions and implications of the standard.

Japan-Russia undersea cable usage begins
by Dan O'Shea
3 Jul 2008 at 9:19am

Japan's NTT Communications and Russian backbone network operator TransTeleComCorporation announced that they have begun commercial operations today on the Hokkaido-Sakhalin Cable System (HSCS), and undersea cable extended between Nevelsk, Sakhalin in Russia and Ishikari, Hokkaido, Japan. The cable, which has a capacity of 640 Gbps, has been under construction since early last year, and was finished last December. The route helps NTT Com establish its shortest possible route between Japan and Europe.

AT&T takes U-verse to Tennessee
by Dan O'Shea
3 Jul 2008 at 8:34am

While broadband adoption in the U.S. has been slowing, it may be a sign of a maturing market that AT&T has started deploying its U-verse fiber network in Tennessee, the state with more municipal fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) projects than any other. The telco is investing $400 million to bring U-verse to 56 Tennessee towns over the next two years. Was AT&T avoiding the possibility of competing with those projects until now? Not likely. It is much more likely that Tennessee's approval of statewide video franchising earlier this year had much more to do with the timing. Comcast also is strong in the state, so some intriguing competitive battles may soon be developing.
